We’re giving a big shout out to our tradespeople, this National Tradies Health Month across August.

Wiki describes a ‘tradie’ otherwise known as a tradesperson as a skilled worker that specialises in a particular trade (think electrical, plumbing, carpentry for example.  Usually they have work experience, on-the-job training, and often formal vocational education.  This is in contrast to an apprentice, who is learning (the tools of) the trade. The majority are exposed to high-risk duties and are susceptible to injury far more than any other job type.

The toll this can have on both physical and mental wellbeing is significant.  Due to the intensity and repetitive nature of the role the Steel Blue Tradies Survey 2022 details that 60% of tradies often are constantly sore and in pain as a result of their job.  This can lead to a decline in physical health and negatively impact their mental health.

Machinery operators, machinery drivers and labourers are most at risk to workplace injury and by industry the agriculture, forestry and fishing industry is highest with 67 worker fatalities followed by transport, postal and warehousing with 49 and third highest is construction with 36 in 2020 from Safe Work Australia key work health and safety statistics 2021

Categorised by compliance, training and physical and mental wellbeing, there are many resources, tools and training to improve tradies physical and psychosocial health and safety.
