We’re great advocates of storytelling – from the use of stories to bring learning to life to finding learning ‘influencers’ to tell the story of how training has helped them. One of the most powerful tools in the L&D storytelling toolkit, and one that’s only growing in importance, is data. Those lovely little stats that can help you tell the story of your learning initiatives and their impact.

So, today we’re going to tell you a story. The story of 2024 so far, told by our very own course data.

Prologue

1.7 million customer employees engaged with our learning platform Learnforce in the first half of 2024 and there were 385,000 Kineo Course completions. This activity provides us with a data-rich source of information that can be analysed to help us glean valuable insights about our courses and our learners. This is great for our customers - they can see the proof that their employees are getting the training they need, but it’s also great for us, we can learn, grow and improve by listening to the story our data is telling us.

Chapter 1: Engage!

As a team of learning designers we like to think that we know from experience how employees engage with our learning. We know we have busy, time-poor learners that want to jump in and out of training when they have time in between their other responsibilities. So, we know we need training to be effective when taken in bite-sized chunks. Our data tells us that typically employees engage with the learning platform for an average of ten minutes. That tells us that many people are taking their training in ten-minute bursts between other tasks, so we need to make sure we grab their attention in those ten minutes!

We’ve integrated these insights into our design thinking. A recent example comes from our ESG courses, where we want to grab attention and keep our learners focussed on the subject. At the start of each chapter is we use positive and surprising statistics or myth-busting activities, getting across a key learning point quickly and making it memorable.

Our data also told us that 81%  of learners accessed the courses on a PC, mostly using the Google Chrome Browser but that 0.5% still use Internet Explorer, an unsupported browser! All of this is good to know for our platform, technology and developer teams. All of our courses are mobile and tablet responsive, so will work just as well for the 17% of learners using mobile devices.

Chapter 2: Perform!

We also want to know how learners feel about the learning. At the end of every course we include a survey where learners can rate and comment on their learning experience. We have an average rating this year so far of 4.6 out of 5, which tells us that our courses are highly regarded by those taking them. We keep a close eye on these figures and review learner comments and feedback as a team every month, taking many of them forward and modifying and improving our courses based on what learners tell us.

Chapter 3: Comply!

Another area where data can help tell a compelling story is in the time spent completing compliance training. Our three most popular courses all cover compliance issues; bullying and harassment, hand hygiene, and health and safety are our three most popular subjects. There’s no avoiding compliance and health and safety training, every organisation needs it, but completing it each year takes time and a lot of the content may be familiar – especially after a few years! Aside from the time commitment, this can lead to frustration as people work their way through the same training they remember from last year.

A great way to tackle this is to use a pre-assessment – sometimes called a pre-test or diagnostic. It tests the employee’s knowledge, confidence, or competence at the start of the course. If they pass the pre-assessment or certain sections of it, they don’t need to repeat that content in the course.

A sample analysis of the pre-assessment data from our most completed course ‘Bullying and Harassment for Employees, showed a 78% pass rate.  Using this data and the number of learners on the course, we were able to work out that this course had saved 4 working days of time for just one organisation. This equates to AUS$12,146.25, and that’s just one course at one organisation!

This feature continues to be an absolute must for our customers and these insights provide organisations with robust evidence that the training is saving them time and money year- on- year.

Epilogue

Everything we do at Kineo is based on data. We’ll keep on making sure our data tells us new and exciting stories about our courses and our learners, and we’ll use the insights to respond, improve, and grow our offer.
