Pollution and waste are all around us. It’s in the sky, the soil, and the water. It’s piled up in gutters. It’s littered across footpaths and carparks. It’s the oily film on puddles after rain. The cigarette butts scattered around park benches. The brown murk that lingers over central business districts once everyone has gone home for the afternoon. The microplastics that are getting pumped into our waterways and oceans.
It’s everywhere. And it’s no surprise then that all that pollution and waste can be seriously detrimental to people’s health.
In Delhi, India, millions of people die every year due to the effects of air pollution in the city1.
In Indonesia, the Citarum River is so polluted by industrial waste dumping and runoff that it has been labelled the most polluted river in the world2.
In the Gulf of Mexico, the leaching of chemicals into the water has created broad ‘dead zones’ where no aquatic life can survive due to the intense pollution3.
Some forecasting has revealed that if plastic keeps getting dumped in the ocean, then by the year 2050 – which is only twenty-seven years away! – there will be more plastic in the sea than fish4.
There’s no doubt that the information sounds dire. But we can make a difference. Making changes like how we dispose of rubbish, improvements in recycling efforts, transitioning to renewable energy sources, and improving our education around the production of waste and pollution are all proven ways of reducing our environmental impact on the planet.
We’re in this together, so together, let’s clean up our act.
